The best waffles are Mickey Waffles and you can make them at home!

Mickey Waffles are a favorite breakfast treat on our family Disney vacations and I love to recreate some of the Disney magic at home.

Mmmmm… Mickey Waffles.  An absolute “Must Eat” treat on any Disney vacation.

Did you know that there are also different character waffles that can be found around Walt Disney World, and they taste great as well?

At the Animal Kingdom Lodge, you can find cute Simba Waffles.

And at the Art of Animation Resort food court, waffles are made into fun Finding Nemo and Cars designs (to go with your Nemo or Cars family suite!).

But why do they taste so good?  So much better than our waffles at home?  It can’t just be the shape… can it?

This is the secret – the actual waffle mix that they use at the Disney Parks and the Disney Cruise Line!  The slightly sweet, malt flavor of Carbon’s Golden Malted mix is what makes Mickey Waffles taste so special – well, that and a little bit of Pixie Dust 🙂  I was able to purchase this on Amazon – so you don’t have to spend a lot of time trying to search for it.

Of course, you need a Mickey Waffle Maker to make the perfectly shaped Mickey Waffles.  The ones they use in the parks are super expensive commercial grade waffle makers, but there are some affordable alternatives.  I have two different versions and I just had to make both shapes to compare!

First, make the batter.  The mix is very simple…

Liberty Tree Tavern – Thanksgiving at the Magic Kingdom, every day!

Liberty Tree Tavern

Have you ever craved a big, family-style Thanksgiving meal when you are months away from the actual holiday?  Time for you to visit the Liberty Tree Tavern at the Magic Kingdom in Walt Disney World.  At lunch and dinner, you can order an amazing meal full of comfort foods… even if you are dining solo – as I was!

The decor of this restaurant makes me smile.  I love the details of the individually themed rooms and it has a comfortable, homey atmosphere.

One thing that has changed since my last visit to this restaurant – adult beverages!  Some of the Table Service restaurants in the Magic Kingdom now serve alcohol, a major change from the traditionally “dry” eateries in the park.

I have to admit, on a hot summer day this Sam Adams was very refreshing – and I liked how this brand of beer fit the restaurant’s colonial theme.

At lunch, diners can choose from an a la carte menu filled with yummy entrees or go with the “Patriot’s Platter,” an “all-you-care-to-eat” menu.  At dinner time, all guests must choose the Platter.

As I had arrived in time for an early dinner, I had to order the “Patriot’s Platter” and I was not disappointed!

My meal began with soft, fluffy rolls that reminded me of the Sally Lunn buns I had enjoyed in England.

Then I “ate my vegetables” by having some of this “Declaration Salad” – fresh greens tossed with a house-made sweet dressing.  A bit too sweet for me, so I only ate a bit.  Not a problem, I knew the best was yet to come!

The main event is a platter filled with roasted turkey breast, pot roast, pork roast, corn, herb stuffing and mashed potatoes.

This is a platter for ONE person!  And my lovely server graciously asked me a few times if I wanted seconds of any portion (or all!) of it.

This meal was sooooo good.  I know it seems like I enjoy most Disney food so maybe I am not a reliable critic, but I am actually pretty discerning when it comes to my meals.  The turkey was my favorite part of the platter.  Very flavorful and juicy.  I would have been happy with just the turkey and stuffing (I am a big stuffing/dressing person).

The pot roast is a reliable classic at the Liberty Tree Tavern – with a luscious gravy and tender meat and they also got the corn and potatoes just right.

The only disappointing bite was the pork roast, which was a bit fatty.

And before I forget, there was a side of macaroni and cheese as well!  You will not leave this place hungry and the food is very accessible and enjoyable for children as well.  I know this dinner would be a hit with my picky eaters.

I REALLY wanted seconds of the turkey, but I knew that I wanted to eat my dessert more.  One of my favorite desserts on Disney property – the Oooey Gooey Toffee Cake!

Authorized_Disney_Vacation_Planner_Liberty_Tree_Tavern-8

This is just a warm, chewy toffee cookie/cake topped with rich vanilla ice cream, drizzled with fudge and caramel sauce and sprinkled with more toffee pieces.   This beauty is neck-and-neck with ‘Ohana’s bread pudding in the race to be my favorite restaurant dessert.

I really enjoyed my dinner at Liberty Tree Tavern and I’m sure you will too!  Do you prefer a la carte lunch items at this restaurant or would you “go for it” and get the platter?

One of the best things you can do for yourself on a Walt Disney World vacation is have your travel agent (Kingdom Planners!) book a Club Level room.  Club Level is Disney’s version of Concierge service and they do it right!  One of the very best resorts for the Club Level experience is Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort.

The Grand Floridian has two Club Level areas – on the 4th floor of the main building and one other building that is entirely Club Level, Sugar Loaf.   We had the pleasure of staying in the Sugar Loaf building and it was first class all the way.

GrandFloridianClubLevel-14

As a beginning to a magical stay, the Club Level service can not be beat.  My family was greeted just as we exited the Magical Express Bus and we were escorted by a Cast Member right to our room. No waiting in line to check-in at all.  We definitely felt like VIPs.

Here is an overhead view of the Club Level Lounge.  You can see the Concierge desk and the ample seating for guests. The Concierge is available during your stay to assist with just about anything Disney-related.

GrandFloridianClubLevel-24

There is even a spot for the little ones to relax, have a snack and watch some Mickey cartoons.

GrandFloridianClubLevel-20

In my opinion, the best reason for upgrading to a Club Level room is the ease of picking up a quick breakfast.  There was always a beautiful display of fresh baked goods, cereal and a protein option like hard boiled eggs.  This is a perfect breakfast for my kids and definitely enough variety for the grown-ups.

It is so nice to have a breakfast without waiting in line and dealing with crowds.  We were able to have our fill and then go straight to the parks with full bellies.

When you return from the parks or the pool in the afternoon, it is lovely to have refreshments waiting for you.  Lots of drink options, including a mini-fridge filled with cold waters and sodas, and if you don’t see something that you need, a server is always happy to get it.

Dining Review – Lunch at the Magic Kingdom’s Skipper Canteen

Skipper Canteen

If you are hungry for more adventurous fare while touring the Magic Kingdom, Jungle Navigation Co LTD. Skipper Canteen (whoo… that’s a mouthfull!) is the restaurant for you!  This dining experience goes way beyond the standard amusement park hamburger and fries, transporting you to the jungles of Asia, Africa and South America.

Skipper Canteen

I have to admit, I was a bit wary of dining at Skipper Canteen.  Would I like the exotic cuisine and more importantly – would our kids eat it?  However, once I entered this beautiful restaurant, I was very happy we decided to try it.

The Canteen is an air-conditioned oasis in Adventureland and the dining rooms are wonderfully themed.  I spent quite a lot of time just looking at all the fun details that Disney put into their decorating.  Like many of Disney’s dining establishments, this restaurant tells a story.  This is the “tropical headquarters” for the skippers who show you the sites on the Jungle Cruise.

LostandUnfoundBacksideofWater

The three dining rooms include the Mess Hall (pictured above), the Jungle Room (former parlor of Dr. Albert Falls) and the S.E.A. Room – a former secret meeting place for the Society of Explorers and Adventurers (found behind a secret bookcase door!).

We were seated in the Jungle Room, and loved the bright, colorful atmosphere.  The tables had enough space between them to give everyone some breathing room and the seating was comfortable.

After exploring the restaurant a bit, we were ready to eat!  Our menu explained the origins of the restaurant.  Fun!
